Faust

Personal Book Cover Design

Digital Illustration, 2025

The "Faust" cover combines several recurring motifs throughout the book into a single image. The “apple” symbolizes both temptation and love: its stem morphs into a devil’s horn, representing Mephistopheles, whereas its core morphs into the torso of a woman, evoking “the Eternal Feminine” that guides Faust toward divine salvation. Positioned on top of the book and staining its cover with juice, the apple also points to Faust’s acceptance of Mephistopheles’ challenge after his scholarly knowledge, no matter how expansive, fails to satisfy the longing in his soul. Together, the apple and the book protrude from the frame and appear to be handed toward the viewer. This depiction responds to Goethe’s recurring emphasis on free will: within the book, Faust must choose whether to continue striving for experience or linger in the static moment; through the cover, that choice is extended to the reader.
